How can 7 days change the fate of a large dredging ship? With bearing failure becoming a recurrent issue, we knew there was a need to find the root cause and solve the problem for good.
We never repair things blindly, we always go that extra mile to provide a lasting solution. When contacted by the operator of a dredging vessel, whose thruster was out of action due to bearing failure, we learned that the problem was occurring every 2 or 3 years despite regular repairs performed by other facilities. Clearly the situation needed to be investigated and solved immediately, but also for the long term.
Once the gearbox arrived at our repair shop in Slidell, we began inspection and disassembly.
This revealed the root cause of the recurring failures. Previous repairs had led to modifications to the bearing supports, thereby making the situation even worse. We needed to engineer a solution that would avoid future bearing failure, fixing the way the bearing and shaft were mounted.
Equipped to manufacture the required components in house, we were also able to machine the housing of the gear drive to accommodate them. We replaced the bearing making sure the upgraded design of our solution would no longer cause failure due to improper bearing movement.
